Palm 002, 12X12
Title: Palm 003, 12X12
Laser carved wood, 12" x 12" x 3/4", drawn elements by Ron Wood. 3-D model and painting by Christian Karl Janssen. Composition by Wood and Janssen. Signed with the studio mark on the front.

This Palm was the first Wood-Janssen collaborative exercise in adapting studio processes toward the specific capabilities of laser fabrication. The artwork was designed, then 18 months later it was executed in-house as designed.

Green and white, gestural brushwork. Unique wood grain signature. Birch plywood medium. Anomalies, variations, and imperfections exist per materials and artwork process. Edges are raw. Artwork is sold unframed. Framing is recommended. Face sealed with satin aqua resin. The displayed digital image is cropped to the suggested presentation. Photographed in natural light. The catalog image online includes identifying text in the lower right corner.

Palm
Many years ago a volunteer Washingtonian palm began life on the studio grounds and drawings, photographs and paintings of it have appeared in various works. It is now a giant. Living in California the landscape is often punctuated with the familiar icon. In this work CKJ asked me to draw separate fronds and a trunk. He then assembled these elements, subjected the drawings to forces such as hurricane strength winds and gravity in the digital environment, and translated the pencil on paper drawings into this powerful icon of tropical environs.

About Series_12X12
Having been busy designing projects since 1972 it has long been my desire to produce artwork available to the general art collector. The studio projects have generally been out of reach of most collectors, weighing in at tons, and project prices ranging from thousands to millions of dollars. Due to the recent acquisition of industrial laser equipment for a large project, the opportunity presented itself to realize this life-long dream. Working with my design team partner of thirteen years, Christian Karl Janssen, the twelve-ex-twelve blocks are our first offering. The artwork begins with traditional studio methodologies such as drawing, painting and photography. Then in the digital environment they are collaboratively translated into the works in the series and executed by output to the lasers. He or I hand paint the works, or dye them, and then finish with lacquer or clear satin stain.
